As part of the Cool Japan / Visit Japan / regional revitalization programs, the overseas export of Japanese broadcast contents has been accelerating. One of the most unique and remarkable initiatives has been the overseas development of regional television programs. In these, regional TV stations, regional businesses and the government partner with a particular country to produce contents for that specific country. Such unprecedented experiments—once unthinkable in the not-so-distant past—have become increasingly common over the last few years. And now, the initiative has moved past the trial-and-error phase of the early period and is now beginning to evolve into a new phase. The important thing now is to share what has been learned and to take inspiration from the pioneers in applying those lessons to future endeavors. Which regions developed what kind of contents for which countries? And what effect did these have on the revitalization of those regions? Those responsible for some of such productions will discuss the still-ongoing case studies—including both their vision and the challenges—as they consider next steps. The panel discussion promises to be insightful for those in the film and TV industries, regional communities, and more. (Moderator: Hidetoshi Kuranari)

Japan once boasted being the second largest film market after the United States, but in 2012 that position was ceded to China, and ever since, China has exploded into a massive film market that has drawn the interest of film professionals around the world who have attempted to enter that market. However, the hurdles have remained extremely high. In Japan, too, many in the industry have been trying various strategies to strengthen relationships with China. As the China market continues to soar, how can one achieve success there? In fact, what do we consider “success” in the China market? This year, the Asia-Pacific Producers Network will bring 50 prominent producers from across Asia to TIFFCOM, and this seminar will invite three of them—all top producers in China—to speak so that they can help us navigate the current terrain and also offer insight into how one can make inroads into the China film market. The panelists are: Jeffrey Chan, COO of Bona Film Group—one of China’s leading distributors—and producer of A Simple Life (starring Andy Lau) and Flying Swords of Dragon Gate (starring Jet Li and directed by Tsui Hark); Philip Lee, executive producer of the Hollywood blockbuster The Revenant and more; and Jianxin Huang, director and producer of The Founding of a Republic, which broke box office records in China. This will be a can’t-miss opportunity to hear the foremost producers in China’s film industry discussing the key to success in China. (Moderator: Satoru Iseki)

Many businesses have already begun or are considering beginning the business application of Virtual Reality. However, business models for the use of VR technology have yet to be fully established. Many businesses are likely struggling to determine exactly what, when and how they should start their VR enterprises. The greatest issue with VR enterprises is the exceptional speed at which VR technology develops, causing something that was cutting edge a year ago to become obsolete just a year later, forcing businesses to push forward without recouping on investments. Yet this also presents an opportunity for businesses entering the market late. By using the latest technology available at the time of entering the market, it becomes possible to offer services that can surpass those offered by predecessors. This seminar will invite representatives from three companies that currently produce and provide such services, engaging them in a discussion about what convinced them to enter the market, their insights into the current state and future prospects, and a sense of where the VR market is headed.
