These days, the content industry has been through the drastic changes caused by the changing media structures, emerging new services, and innovations. Today in Hollywood, I’m hearing news or rumors that could greatly impact the industry: for instance, the transition of consumer interest from theater and TV to online streaming, the rise of virtual reality in consumer products, contents production by Facebook and Apple. In this seminar, we will talk about those changes in the entertainment industry based on our impressions and experiences from the collaborations with industry professionals. Furthermore, we, Center for MEMES have been strengthening our networks inside the U.S. and keen to expand it globally. Therefore, it will be an honor to speak at Japan Content Showcase, to producers who create a number of quality contents.

Prof. Sood is a researcher and teaching expert in brand equity and consumer decision making. After gained industry experience in product marketing at Central Corporation, now a division of Sprint, he completed a MBA program at the Kellogg Business School of Management, Northwestern University, and also obtained Ph.D. Marketing from the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University. Currently, he serves as the faculty director at Center for MEMES, UCLA Anderson to enhance its prestigious education in the area of entertainment. Also, actively involved with industry, he has worked with several leading marketing companies such as Intel, Microsoft and Disney.

Mr. Tucker is a marketer, educator and technology leader in the technology, academic and entertainment sectors. He holds an MBA from UCLA Anderson, and an M.A. in instructional and leaning technologies from Columbia University. It has been 2 years since the “first year of streaming services” in 2015. Which way are the big distribution businesses in Japan and abroad headed two years on? The producer of Thor (Craig Kyle), COO of Crunchyroll, a company that distributes Japanese animation mainly in the US, and one more panelist from China engage in a thorough debate on Japanese content and its future.

Profile:Craig Kyle
Craig Kyle began his career with DreamWorks Animation. He was involved in development, production and script writing for many works of Marvel Studios and was the executive producer for eight Marvel/Lionsgate Direct-to-DVD films including; Ultimate Avengers: I & II, Invincible Iron Man, Hulk VS, Next Avengers, Doctor Strange, Planet Hulk and Thor: Tales of Asgard. Later, he became the SVP of Production and Development of Marvel Studios’ live-action division, producing Thor and Thor: The Dark World. After the completion of Thor:Ragnarok, Craig left Marvel Studios, where he worked for 14 years, and embarked upon a journey to pursue his passion. He, then, ventured into the video game industry as the producer of Blue Thunder (a remake of the 1983 Roy Shreider classic for Sony). At present, Craig owns Yūgen Entertainment with long time business partner Tim Connors and is engaged in the production of a live-action TV version of Japanese manga GA-REI with Fox.

Streaming service is changing the ecosystem of moving-image industry worldwide. Japan is not an exception, albeit slowly, compared to the US and China. Also, in recent years, the demand for Japanese storytelling (Manga and Anime) is undoubtly high in the time of streaming service. This seminar will provide how the leading American and Chinese streaming companies look at this ecosystem change and the Japanese IP usage in coming 5 years.

Introduction

In recent years, Japanese content has aroused global interest like never before. Japanese works are making their way abroad in the form of visual content. Your Name (Directed by Makoto Shinkai) is a major example of Japanese content being screened around the world. Some are even being produced in Hollywood, such as Kokaku Kidotai (by Masamune Shirow) which was produced as Ghost In The Shell. This trend is expected to continue for certain years. Online distribution platforms are contributing greatly to the global expansion of Japanese content. Not restricting themselves to distribution of existing works, more and more streaming service companies have lately started their own productions. DEATH NOTE (written by Tsugumi Ohba) produced by Netflix in the US is one such example. Such online distribution companies have the potential to transform the prevalent framework of distribution and production. In this seminar, we will invite representatives of film distribution companies from the US and China and producers from the US to gain insights into the possibilities of Japanese content and the impact of distribution on production, while discussing the future of Japanese content and trends in the film industry, which is entering a period of transition. Introduction

Japan’s intellectual property strategy positions the content industry as “an industry in which we can anticipate collaborations with peripheral industries, such as products, and ripple effects for other industries, including manufacturing and services, through the establishment of the Japan brand using content” (Intellectual Property Strategic Program 2014). The public and private sectors together have been implementing various policies for integrated overseas expansion of our cuisine, culture, goods and services, with broadcasting content at the core. Interest in Japanese cuisine is rising around the world, reflecting the enormous contribution of broadcasting content to the recent surge in inbound tourism. Meanwhile, there is a focus on educational programs as broadcasting content capable of further increasing the number of Japan fans. If the interest in Japan, which began with food and tourism, connects to an interest in learning the Japanese language, then it will help build a stronger Japan brand. Expectations are rising for the economic effect anticipated from the ripples this will generate.
In this seminar, we will feature education-based broadcasting content made in Asian countries. We will talk about parts adapted from Japan’s domestic program production, differences in performance and business cultures, and precautions necessary during production. Producers will share latest, first-hand information from their real experiences. We will also focus on the purpose of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in encouraging such programs under FY2016 “Comprehensive Support Project of Overseas Expansion of Broadcast Contents” and FY2017 “Comprehensive Development Project for the Foundation of Overseas Expansion of Broadcast Contents.”

Special-effects creations such as the Super Sentai series could be the unique IP culture in Japan. This seminar will talk its oversea strategy in three regions: Western; East Asia; and Southeast Asia. Particularly, it will focus on the strategy in the US and South Korea of Power Rangers and The Super Sentai series as a case study

Introduction

These days, we often hear about overseas expansion of various intellectual properties (IP) made in Japan. However, most of these conversations basically revolve around Japanese animations, or anime. We do not hear much about any live-action IPs making their way abroad. To begin with, very few live-action IPs are commercialized or developed into various businesses in the same way as anime are.
Of those, special-effects creations such as the Super Sentai series, with its history of over 40 years, and the “Kamen Rider” series form a genre unique to Japan. In this seminar, we have invited Mr. Satoshi Shinohara, in-charge of the overseas expansion of these two works at TOEI Co., Ltd., to present examples of overseas business development different from that of anime.(Satoshi Shinohara)

The locations that featured in Japanese anime are being turned into tourist destinations, attracting a large number of foreign visitors. To expand this trend further, a full-fledged “Anime Pilgrimage” project has began this August, selecting and announcing 88 sacred anime sites. We will discuss what kind of services content-related experiences (services) we should offer for Japanese IP fans around the world to further increase consumption.

Through the talks from the collaborators with producers: lawyer, tax accountant and financier, this seminar will pursue strategies for effective team building in business development overseas, from the three perspectives of in-house human resources, experts outside a company, and business partners.

In the content industry, producers select right team members out of the following three groups: in-house human resources, supporters with expertise in particular subjects such as lawyers, and business partners including financiers and distributors. And to build relationships with them is crucial to successfully manage projects and maximize outcomes.

Message

To produce content projects, especially ones pursuing a huge success overseas, producers are required to have skills and experiences besides passion. But also, it is very important to select right persons with required skills, in order to build a team in accordance with projects. In this seminar, panelists who have been involved in numerous international projects to support producers will discuss how to build an effective team for business development in the international market. Please come and listen if you are working on international projects.

After received BA at Faculty of Business and Commerce, Keio University, he had worked for NHK Enterprise Inc. as a director of broadcast programs. Then he passed the bar exam, had worked for a leading law firm in Tokyo, and ended up with starting his own in 2007. And in 2010, it was transformed into E&S Advisory firm to be capable of supporting wholly. Recently in 2016, he also formed CRG Co., Ltd., which is a hybrid of production and agency.

Keiichi Uezumi (Representative Director, Japanese Certified Public Accountant, Japanese Licensed Tax Accountant / Bizadvisors, Inc.)
In his early career, he managed American film funds at PwC Japan, and at its LA office since 2007, had served as an international tax accounting manager in the film and music industry. After the experiences at PwC, he began supervising IPOs and M&As of Hong Kong Companies in GEM. And in 2002, eventually he established his own firm, Bizadvisors, Inc. to provide various services in the area of content business including fund formation, SPC, tax return and so on.

Makoto Kubo (Managing Executive Officer / BIGLOBE Inc.)
Started his career at NEC in 1989. After years involving in accounting and finance, he launched an online service “BIGLOBE”. Later on, he established and seconded himself to a joint venture with KDDI and Panasonic, being in charge of video production and programming. Since 2006, he took a responsibility for investment strategies at NEC BIGLOBE, and a year after, he launched BIGLOBE Capital where he has been in charge of fund management.

Ranging from Apocalypse Now of the 1970s to the recent Pacific Rim, a large number of world-famous masterpieces have been shot in the the Philippines. On the other hand, looking back to big budget films relating to Japan, such as Silence and Ghost in the Shell, show that these works were not actually filmed in Japan. We will discuss why the Philippines became a favorite shooting place even for foreign productions, and will talk about its potential of Japan.
